KiND: KHIMTI NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
The sustainability of the Khimti Rural Electric Cooperative remains the prime concern for both contributors, NORAD and HPL. Hence, the objective for the final or third phase of the development project now named the Khimti Neighborhood Development (KiND) Project will be to construct mini hydropower plants, electrify additional areas, continue community development works and also strengthen the KREC institution so as to achieve the sustainability of KREC from all aspects: financial, technical and social. HPL has signed an agreement with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for the implementation of the project. The following outputs are envisaged in the KiND Project:
- Increased generating capacity in the KREC system, to decrease peak-load deficit by constructing 400kW Haluwa Khola Mini Hydropower plant
- Extended project area electrified and modest growth of consumption is achieved through productive power use by further electrifying 3700 households
- Basic infrastructure in health/sanitation, irrigation, education and production/market access is improved and functional in both the JREDP and KiND area
- Communities are aware of improved living practices and have skills,and take up income earning opportunities, in both JREDP and KiND areas
- KREC is fully functional and its operation is sustainable
